Two calculators and a readiness check

A starting figure for how much life insurance is enough, which of two health plans is genuinely cheaper across a year, and whether you have everything ready before you request a quote.

Life insurance coverage scenario

Compare a smaller, cheaper policy against a larger one across a realistic number of years, to see what the premium difference is actually buying.

Assumptions this uses
  • Both options are assumed to be the same type of policy — term length and structure held constant.
  • Premiums are treated as fixed for the period shown; actual premiums can change at renewal or re-underwriting.
  • This does not account for underwriting outcomes, health rating classes or insurer-specific pricing.
  • No fees or riders are included in either figure.

Limitations: this does not account for how your health, age or underwriting class changes actual pricing, or for any rider or add-on cost.

Before you quote

Write your coverage gap down before you talk to anyone

List what you currently hold — life, health, disability — and next to each one write who it protects and for how much. A gap is usually obvious once it is on paper: no life insurance with a mortgage and one income, no disability cover despite the income being the household's main asset, or a health plan nobody has checked since a new baby arrived. This costs nothing and takes fifteen minutes.

Health plan true annual cost

Two health plans side by side on total annual cost, including the deductible and coinsurance exposure the premium alone hides.

Assumptions this uses
  • Both plans are assumed to cover the same network and benefit categories at a comparable level.
  • Expected out-of-pocket cost should reflect your own likely usage for the year, not the plan's maximum.
  • This does not account for subsidy eligibility, which depends on household income.

Limitations: this compares estimated total cost only. It cannot tell you which plan's network includes your specific providers, which matters as much as the numbers.

Coverage-readiness checklist

The details worth having settled before you request a life or health insurance quote.

Assumptions this uses
  • This reflects the information most US insurers and agents ask for at quote stage.
  • Requirements vary by insurer, by state and by product type.

Limitations: a checklist prepares your questions and makes your quotes comparable. It does not price a policy or tell you what cover you need.

Compare life insurance quotes on one specification

Decide term length and coverage amount first, then quote that identical spec everywhere — it is the only way a cheaper number means a cheaper policy rather than a smaller one.
