Compare
What to compare, and in what order
This is not a ranking of insurers. It is the specification to hold every quote against, so a cheaper number means a cheaper policy rather than a smaller one.
How this table is built.
- Ordered by consequence: the items where being wrong costs the most come first.
- Nothing in this table is paid placement, and no insurer is named.
- Each row states what to check and why, not which option is 'best'.
- Where practice varies by state or insurer, the row says so rather than generalising.
| What to check | Why it matters | What a thin quote does | Where to confirm |
|---|---|---|---|
| Life insurance coverage amount | Anything below your calculated need leaves a real gap for your dependents | Defaults to a flat, unadjusted multiplier | Recalculate with the life insurance calculator on this site |
| Term length vs need | A term that ends before dependents are independent leaves a gap right when it matters | Shortened to lower the premium without matching your timeline | Match term length to years until the mortgage is paid or children are independent |
| Health plan deductible and out-of-pocket maximum | The out-of-pocket maximum is what actually caps your financial exposure | Premium looks low while the maximum exposure is high | Read the plan's summary of benefits and coverage document |
| Provider network | All the cost-sharing figures assume you stay in-network | Assumed to include your current doctors without checking | Confirm directly with the plan or your provider's office |
| Disability coverage, if any | Insures the income that pays for everything else | Assumed to exist via workers' comp, which usually excludes illness | Check any employer benefit in writing, and price a standalone policy |
| Riders and add-ons | Each one is a real cost whether or not it fits your situation | Bundled into the total without being itemized | Ask for the base policy priced separately from every add-on |
This tells you what to compare. It cannot tell you which insurer or plan is best for you, because that depends on underwriting, your health, and your household's specific risk — which is only knowable by requesting a quote.
